August 16, Ucluelet BC

Woke up this morning to clear skies and almost now wind. Neah Bay was a very nice anchorage, the scenery was not great but the bay was quiet with no rolling. We traveled across the entrance of Straight of Juan de Fuca, with small swells and no wind. It took 7 hours to get to Ucluelet, after which we stopped the customs dock, and called in. We are officially and legally in Canada, so up went the Canadian flag, on the starboard flag halyard. We anchored in Spring Cove, and were all alone for 2 hours. After that 5 more boats showed up. There is a lot of boating in this area. I believe they are all salmon fishing. The weather has been amazing. No fog the last two days. Today the temperature climbed all the way up to 74 degrees, and 81 degrees in the cabin. Tomorrow will see us heading north to Tofino

August 15: Neah Bay

We started bright and early at 6 am this morning. Trying to get the best tide action. The trip from Port Angeles to Neah Bay was 54nm, and 6.75 hours. We did see 10 knts from time to time with the favorable 3 knot push. We started to feel the ocean swells which became steep with the ebb tide, which did not agree with us (felt sick). That lasted for about 3 hours and then calmed down. Almost no wind today which was OK, just motored all the way. Fueled up here in Neah Bay then went back out into the bay and anchored in 30' sandy bottom. Hope to go to Ucluelet, BC tomorrow.

August 14, Port Angeles

August 14, 2012

Departed Port Townsend at 9:00 heading to Port Angeles, Boat Haven Marina. Had 3 knot tide against us and a 16 knot wind against us. 32 miles and 6.75 hours later we arrived. The refig was not fixed before the start of the trip,but we will make due. Sunny warm skies most of the day. Tomorrow we plan an early start to get to Neah Bay, WA.

West Coast of Vancouver Island, BC

On August 14 Susan and I will be traveling from Port Townsend, WA to the west coast of Vancouver Island.  Updates and photos to follow.

Summer Place

Charleston Marina, Charleston, Oregon

Summer Place is a Hallberg-Rassy 42F.  She was built in Ellos Sweden in April, 1997.  I bought her in Seattle in the winter of 2009 from an owner that had not used her for a few years.  After a very extensive survey a long list of repairs was handed to me.  Now in the summer of 2012 that list has been completed and more.  All the standing rigging and running rigging have been replaced. A line stripper was installed on the shaft.  A spare prop is stored on board. A new Mastervolt charger/inverter was connected.  All the plumbing has been serviced.  New main and 125% genoa were built by Hasse Port Townsend Sails.  Transmitting AIS was installed with feeds to the Raymarine C-120 and navigation computer.  Pactor III modem was added to the ICOM 710 SSB radio.  All new 3/8" BBB galvanized 375' anchor rode attached to 60lbs CQR anchor. Added a removable inner fore stay and new storm jib with removable running back stays.  The AB 9.0 aluminum dinghy rides up front.  And much much more.
