Last night Brad checked in with his folks by sat phone and called his coworker Shawn who was kind enough to pick up our vehicle in Seattle and drive to back to Coos Bay. Thanks Shawn!
Up at 05:00 this morning. We are setting the storm sails before pulling up the Anchor. Leaving Bull Harbour at 06:10. We have decided to cross the Nahwitti Bar instead of skirting around the reef close to shore at Cape Sutil as the guide book recommends, this was a good decision, as the bar was not rough. We are early as usual, but the boat handles well and the seas are not as rough as expected. We do have quite a lot of fog, so the running lights are on as well as the tri color, which I can't remember if it needs to be on when you are motoring. The storm stay sail has a bright florescent head. There isn't much traffic, but we want to be as visible as we can. As we are rounding Cape Scott, several small recreational vessels are zipping out in front of us to get to the fishing grounds at mid morning. The fog is still with us, but there is plenty of visibility. The engine is running a bit rough, so Brad switches over the the other fuel filter and changes the bad one while we are running, and the engine is back to purring along. About 14:00 the sun starts to peak through and we can see the shore clearly. The Wind has been an average of 10 knots, enough for the storm sails to stabilize the rocking of the boat a little, but not enough to use the genoa because it is directly astern on the course that we are following. We bounce into Quatsino Sound and motor up Forward Inlet looking for some place nice to drop the anchor. We settle on the head of Winter Bay and drop anchor at 15:40. There is much work to be done, putting the storm sails away and getting the sheets, halyards, running back stays, etc. put back to normal. Brad BBQs hotdogs on the grill tonight for dinner. I need to call home and then crash. Today's stats: sea temp 52.7, outside temp 67, engine hours 9.5, watermaker one hour, nautical miles 58.6, total trip miles 551, GPS coordinates 50.31.950N / 128.00.544W.
