Pruth Bay

Tuesday, July 28, 2015

Last night’s anchorage was well protected and with four other boats.  There is a misty rain as we pull up anchor.  We had a good rain last night and are in for another as we travel today.  The tide is still flooding into the lagoon as we pass through the narrow exit.  Out in the channel we have a south wind up to 20 knots making a rough ride.

Heading down Fisher Channel and Fitz Hugh Sound we sight more whales.  Our biggest encounters are with the commercial net fishing boats. It is difficult to see where their nets are located in the limited visibility.  In one instance one of the boats races back and forth across our path, herding us away from their net.

Turning into Hakai Passage we leave the commercial fisherman behind and have only the recreational fishing boats to keep an eye out for.  The water is less rough, but now we can feel the swells coming in from Queen Charlotte Sound.

MEAY PASSAGE

It is quite rugged and beautiful as we navigate the channel between Hacate Island and the small islets.

KWAKSHUA CHANNEL

Our destination today is the head of Kwakshua Channel, Pruth Bay.  This is the location of the Hakai Beach Institute, a research and conference center.  There are several boats anchored here as it has a popular trail to the beach on the west side of Calvert Island.

Beautiful Gorgeous Day!  We spent the first part of the morning fixing the mainsail on the in-mast furler which was stuck at about the height if the first spreader.  Then we dingied over to the institute and walked the trail over to the west side of Calvert Island, where there is a beautiful ocean beach.

We walked the beach enjoying the sound of waves crashing against the shore and watching the sand pipers scurry along the beach foraging for food.

RELAXING ON THE BEACH

In the afternoon the wind picked up, but the sky remained blue.  AND finally we have an internet connection that seems to be working so maybe we can get this blog out, but still not good enough for pictures.
