Backeddy Resort, Egmont

Thursday, August 20, 2015

The fog has descended on the mountains.  The air is still.  Only the current from our private little waterfall pushes at the boat.  The stern line easily pulls free from shore.  150 feet of chain pulls up well with only a strange little worm hitching a ride.  We are the first to be underway.  It takes about an hour to travel the 3 miles to the rapids at three knots boat speed.   In the distance we can see a couple other boats leaving as well.  There is a sizable boat waiting to come in as we go through.  A little early perhaps, we have two knots against us.  The breeze comes and goes in Queens Reach.  Turning the corner into Princess Royal Reach there are white caps, wind waves, fetch, and up to 27 knot on the nose.  It’s time to button up the side canvas as we are getting spray midship and over the top.  The wind diminishes by about half as we turn down Prince of Wales Reach.  More boats are passing and there is more chatter on the VHF.  One more corner to turn and then we will cross over Jervis Inlet and head for Sechelt Inlet.   Our destination is Egmont which is just inside before you reach rapids.  Brad calls the Backeddy Resort on VHF 66A.  On the linear dock we park behind the same yacht we followed into Malibu Rapids and passed us on the way out.  This marina is a bit rustic, but the staff is very nice and it is good to be attached to shore after so much time.  My priority is to do the laundry.  We also need to dispose of garbage, get fuel, and provision which can wait until we reach Nanaimo.  I spend my last loonie doing three large loads.  Not everything is dry, so there are a lot of clothes hanging out inside the boat.  We have dinner at the Pub.   The Skookum burgers are very good.  Brad rinses the salt off the boat.  Hopefully it won’t all reaccumulate tomorrow crossing the Strait of Georgia.  There is a lovely view from the lawn above the marina.  We see orcas playing in the inlet in the evening.  Engine hours 6, nautical miles 37.6.  Our GPS coordinates: 49⁰45’467 N, 123⁰56’378 W.
