Up before the sun this morning,
as we ready the boat for our journey, a line of fifteen ducks paddle by, ALL IN
A ROW. The current at Backeddy Marina is
at a minimum as we untether the boat and slip away at 07:00. From Egmont we head down Agamemnon Channel,
passing two sets of power lines which along with bridges make me nervous. It is calm in the channel. Out in Malaspina Strait the wind picks up so
we set the sails.
SAILING ACROSS THE STRAIT OF
GEORGIA
The wind is off the starboard
stern. It is a long way across the
Strait of Georgia. The sea is choppy
with increasing significant wind waves.
When the wind speed increases to 25 knots, we reduce the sails by
eliminating the Genoa. Outside
Protection Island we put away the Main and motor into the harbor. Making the boat ready we head for the fuel
dock. I hike up the ramp to shore with
two weeks’ worth of garbage while Brad fills the diesel tank. We take on 260 liters for $280.57 Canadian
(1.099/L) best price yet. There is no
vacancy in the marina so we head out to the suburbs in the anchoring field by
New Castle Island. We pick a spot in 25
feet. The wind is from the NW now, but
is due to switch to the SE this evening.
Travel time 6.75 hours, Engine hours 2.8, nautical miles ----.
The water tank filled in 2.5hours.
Our GPS coordinates: 49⁰10’582 N, 123⁰55’966 W. After getting the boat settled and the
docking lines and fenders stowed, we ready the dingy with the 9.9 HP engine for
the trip back to the marina. This task
is made difficult by the rough water from the wind and all the traffic in the
harbor. It takes quite a while to find a
place to dock the dingy. They have water
taxis here and discourage landing your dingy.
We have our Magna Cart and water resistant bags ready to help cart our
purchases from the grocery store. Almost
400 Canadian dollars later we are loaded down and heading back to the
boat. The wind has switched up in our
favor. Brad drives carefully so we
don’t get swapped by the wakes from passing planes and boats. Back at the boat there is still work to be
done unloading and storing the purchases.
It’s been a very long day. Brad
calls home on the SAT phone as I prepare dinner, then it is showers and bedtime
at 10:30.

Resting
up today at anchor in Nanaimo Harbor.
Brad is reading and running experiments. I am cleaning and
crocheting. In the afternoon we head
over to town and walk along the water front.
It is very pleasant. There are
street performers, and lot of people enjoying the afternoon as we are. Back at the boat we get ready for tomorrow,
putting the dingy away and checking the current table for Dodd’s Narrows. The wind dies down at sunset. There is live music coming from the dingy pub
at Protection Island.
